The first generation had a glitch that could occasionally turn a missingno into a trainer sprite.

I once caught Professor Oak at Cinnabar. He had an unused trainer sprite.

I actually experienced this glitch on my first playthrough in saphire on accident. i accidentally killed off latias mostly because i didn't know what it was and when another pokemon got sent out it just confused me and i tried to run to see if it was a trainer battle but it just let me run away. nice to finally figure out what happened after all this time
