Xubuntu 18.10 'Cosmic Cuttlefish' Installation and First Look

Показать описание
Today, I'm taking a quick look at Xubuntu 18.10 "Cosmic Cuttlefish". Xubuntu features the Xfce (sometimes pronounced as "X-Face") desktop environment and nice suite of programs. Xubuntu 18.10 will be released "officially" tomorrow so technically this daily build that I'm looking at is beta, but nothing major should change between now and tomorrow.

Hi DT just let you know, I watch you channel before I go to work and just chill.

Thank you for the review, DT!
Xfce has been my main DE for years; it is stable, modular and fast (keyboard-driven).
By the way... Your channel is awesome!

Great review, just a suggestion, instead of using htop towards the end just open up a terminal as soon as you first boot and run "free -m" or '"free -h" that way we get a measurement right at boot as a baseline then towards the end run htop to see the memory usage after opening up a few applications. That way it stays "scientific."

Linux Mint 19 XFCE uses approximately 1/2 the memory on bootup & that's when running in a vm. It has become my #1 distro choice. Now I have to find a laptop I can dedicate to it :). I'm a new-again Linux user. I stopped using it in 2009 and went full on Mactard lol. Don't get me wrong, I still think Mac OS is the best OS I've ever used but I have come to really dislike Apple as a company. I really enjoy your videos and because of you and a few other distro hoppers on YouTube I've learned a lot and am very grateful to you for sharing your experiences and knowledge.

I think Catfile search didn't work because the files you searched for are hidden files and the "Hidden Files" option in the menu was unchecked.

I'm just not comfortable with calling it "X-Face".

It looks a tip for ya....since it's "XFCE"?...you SHOULD be able to use the "Window Shade" mode, (where if you put the mouse on the title-bar?...and scroll your mouse-wheel "up"?...the window rolls up into the title an easier way to preview different wallpapers....as opposed to moving the entire window to the side to see the background. Great vid!!

"today i'm reviewing <insert name of distro> .... 2cores 4gb of ram ... strong, complicated pw (= dt), no autologin for privacy ... restart ... install htop .... show each item of menu ... fin". HM with good planing you only need one audio-version (except distro-name). So good reviews, but it's getting repetitive ... (taking into acount is a better series...)

Regarding high memory usage..i guess ubuntu uses application cache to make system more snappy .. may be they are keeping frequently required library in memory so app. startup faster...

07:02 It's not working probably because you're looking only in the /home sector and the show hidden files is off. You should choose the / directory, this way, both /home and / will be shown.
07:50 Yes, Thunar is fast like PcManFM, however, it lacks some features e.g. the search function (you need to use catfish to search for files). I think it should be integrated into Thunar like Nemo, Nautilus and Dolphin.
08:29 MATE Calculator isn't as good as the Gnome Calculator
08:30 Mousepad like Leafpad and Xed are very simple and lightweight plain text editors.
19:10 It seems you have chosen the snap version of htop, this explains it all.
20:55 Next time, you should first open the system monitor or htop before opening a lot of applications and closing, it seems that some of them are still on.

I wonder if the high ram usage is due to you running the snap version of htop.

6:20 You just need to check "Show Hidden Files" in the options menu.

I started to love Xubuntu the Voyager way.

One thing that drives me crazy with Xubuntu is why can't they fix the icon sizes in the panel to all be the same size especially when you resize the panel. Why is it Manjaro XFCE can get this right out-of-the-box but Xubuntu time after time still cannot figure it out or even try to. Manjaro XFCE has a much more consistent look and feel in my opinion.

Why are they moving over to Calemares instead off using the Ubiquity installer? It's very easy to use. And if I choose to install the propriety drivers I must disable Secure boot to install them.

thank you for the nice review dear dirik ... i think the high ram usage it's an issue with virtualbox ... virtualbox 5.2.20 got released few days ago ... try to update it and take a look again ... or maybe it's with the new ubuntu 18.10 ... let's wait and see
