Fuel Tools - Esbit 5-piece Trekking Cookset

I made some chicken noodle soup and a grilled cheese sandwich with one of my newer stoves. The Esbit 5-piece Trekking Cookset, what do you think of it?

I've never thought of using this kind of stove until watching this video. Uses a lot less space and weight than carrying a canister of gas. May have to look into that. Thanks guys.

This is an excellent, compact stove system. I've got a couple myself, the spread and open kind. I have noticed, the last time I used mine, the fuel block was hard to start. I'm guessing age had something to do with it. They were about three years old. I like 'em. Good video.

Too many unhelpful water boil test videos on youtube. You`ve seen one, you`ve seen em all.
I`ve had this kit for about 2 years now, and I`ve cooked all kinds of good stuff in it, from fried rice to stir frys.
You can even use the stove portion with a small frying pan (although I usually use esbit`s folding stove for that).

Good video.  These stoves obviously perform best in wind free conditions (other YouTubers have had difficulty heating this much water with a solitary Esbit cube, in which case an extra windshield would probably be needed).  I don't think the stainless steel spatula is a very good idea if you want the anodised coating to last.

HEET is not a good choice for fuel.  People use it because it's easy to find, and they think it's cheap.  If you use an alcohol stove, but the fuel these stoves are made to use, which is denatured alcohol.  It burn much better than HEET, and is cheaper. It's also safer.

Denatured alcohol is just 190 proof grain alcohol with poison added so you can't drink it. This lets the maker sell it without an alcohol permit, and without paying taxes the government puts on drinking alcohol. This also means that 190 proof grain alcohol, while expensive, is also a touch better fuel because it's a touch purer.

If you don't mind the expense, 190 proof grain alcohol has advantages. Not only does it but a touch better than denatured alcohol, you can also use it for medicinal purposes, and it's safe around children. No child can swallow it. Even most adults can't swallow it without coughing it back out.

But by denatured alcohol over HEET every time. Both denatured alcohol and straight grain alcohol are also safe to use inside a tent, or even inside a car, in an emergency, such as being caught in a blizzard. Neither emits dangerous fumes. In training, I've even used an alcohol stove with a simmer ring, and burning straight grain alcohol, inside a poncho tent.

As for the Esbit tablets, they're better than Coughlan's, but the ideal situation is to buy both. Coughlan's are small, but they're about one fifth the price of Esbit tabs, if you buy a large package. One Coughlan's tab added to an Esbit tab near the will boil three cups of water easily..

And at the price of Coughlan's, if need be, you can burn four of them and still come out cheaper than one Esbit tab. But I burn both. Doing so lets me boil all the water I need, and saves me money. Quite a bit of money over time. When I buy Coughlan's in bulk, I can burn one Esbit and one Coughlan's for eighty cents less than burning two Esbit tabs.
