A good rule of thumb is that a well-told mystery can be even more satisfying on a second read while a poorly-told mystery is pretty much unreadable on a second go round.

This information is great but something I've noticed is when you say "save the most revealing puzzle piece until the end, " that could be more specific by saving "the more revealing the puzzle piece is, the closer to the reveal it should be." It's just something I've picked up on from reading/watching plot twists.

One of my favorite mysteries is Death On The Nile by Agatha Christie. The way she throws vital clues in the middle of mundane observations is genius. Poirot examining the murder scene just after the body was found is the best example of this. Without spoiling it there's something he notices while just looking at the room that seems so small and inconsequential but is the most vital clue in the entire story. Without us noticing it Christie straight up throws the key to busting the killer's air tight alibi right there at the very start of the investigation. Freaking genius.
