I watched this movie yesterday. I can’t control my tears. It’s not my youth, but it’s my parents and grandparents’ youth. They have been there before. It’s a movie about history, love and struggling.
My mom told me when the Chinese economic reform in 1978, there are lots of ‘new and fancy stuffs’ rushed into mainland China. She wore the bootcut jeans and aviator sunglasses at that time, but most of the people felt shy and thought how can she dress up like that? And that time they know the taste of Coca Cola and ice cream from the West and singing Teresa Teng’s songs. The world was changing so fast that time. This movie has lots of scenes about that. This is why the middle age people and elder people really think this movie relate to them. Thanks director Feng. You tell the story to us, and it’s memorable.

The trailer is a master piece by itself. It's so beautiful that I'm afraid if I watch the movie, it might ruin the feeling I have for the trailer. But, hell, I'll watch this movie anyway.

I liked it, it moved me a lot. I cried a bit in it too, the history behind it of the Chinese Cultural Revolution is very interesting as they performed propaganda for the Army. Then, two of them are sent to fight and help the wounded in the Chinese-Vietnamese War. They are both changed by it, but recover from it. Well, acted, the final part of the new China pushing its past aside is bitter too.

just saw the film. it's alright.

whilst the cinematography and music are great (especially loved the 'one-take' action sequence even if the cgi was a kind of bad), it never sinks its teeth into the intricacies of war and propaganda, things just happen but they never connect it back to the war. the teenagers of the dance troupe aren't mindless patriots and it's revealed that not all of them even want to be there, but the dangers and pitfalls of patriotism are never properly addressed. rather than critiquing war and nationalism like it should have, it feels slightly glorifying instead.

the scenes are too fleeting so you seldom feel attached to the characters the film wants you to connect with, which makes the more potent parts of the film feel really flat. i think that was the fault of the editing department, sometimes scenes are stitched together really quickly and strangely and it leaves you confused. that's also why the characters feel so flat and sugary sweet, another reason why emotional moments don't really land.

it's not a bad film, but it's not a great one either - and i expected a film deeper than what i got. with that said, it's a gorgeous film, the music is beautiful and the performances are generally solid. if i had to give it a score i'd say 6.5.

Tiếng súng đã vang trên bầu trời biên giới
Gọi toàn dân ta vào cuộc chiến đấu mới
Quân xâm lược bành trướng dã man, đã dày xéo mảnh đất tiền phương.
