What kind of car for less than $10,000 offers adaptive air suspension, heated steering wheel, massage seats and as much leg room as a Mercedes S class? The VW Phaeton! I have always thought they were pretty cool, never really saw them on the road. Check out what it's like to own one and drive it all the way across the country!

The Phaeton has this stuff for cold weather:
It has automatic humidity control, no knobs, it just takes care of it. I've never had a window fog.
It has an electrically heated windshield, like an airplane and like an airplane, the windshield heater runs on 24 Volts.
It has electric heaters in the climate control system so you don't have to wait for the engine to warm-up.
It has a Residual Heat function that activates a pump in the coolant system that closes a check valve, cutting off the radiator and circulating the coolant between the engine and climate control system, using the heat of the engine to keep the car warm while you are away.
It has snow screens that catch the powdery snow before it can build up on you air filters.
Of course, the steering wheel heater, so nice on any car.

I work at a vw dealer, I own a phaeton and I have many customers that are also phaeton owners. Realistically speaking you don’t need a “phaeton certified” tech to work on it. Technically there are no phaeton certified technicians any longer, they stopped offering the training course for those cars a long time ago and the certifications have since expired. Anyone can work on it as long as they know what they’re doing. I work on mine all the time and I am not a technician. They’re just another car. The electrical portion of the car will require an experienced tech for sure but anyone can work on it if they’re a competent enough tech.

The Phaeton is an incredibly engineered car! I recently filmed a 2008 TDI Phaeton and I was really impressed by it. The rear window with the hidden heating elements was one of my top features that I noticed.

I own 1 of 114 in this car and i have driven VW since Jetta MKII '86 & Audi 5000, Audi GT Coupe, A6 Avant(wagon). When you are stopped at a light and the guy in the Mercedes gives you a grin and a head nod you know this person knows what the score is. Witnessed this many times.

This car with the W12 is my dream car but I can’t justify the maintenance on it. Wonderful car. Wish VW still made these for the US. Even the current Bentley’s aren’t as cool imo

I like this review. Eddie and the driver seem like nice people.

In order to have an smooth phaeton, you must fix it, yourself, Mechanics are terrified of working in it, a vw dealer refuse to service me in florida, but in the bright part, its easy to find a parts car ( if you have the space) do not used it for city driving, but long drive, thats were it shines.

I love mine, have a V8 lwb in the uk, its amazing, mine is even more loaded than this one in the video, only thing that sucks is the fuel economy, but will do 30mpg on a run so can't complain.

I was lucky enough to have 2 Phaetons. I got my first new Phaeton in 2004, it was a silver V8. When my lease was up I wanted to get another one and they stopped shipping to the US in 2006. I searched the whole country and there were only 13 new Phaetons left and I found one in Evanston Illinois and leased it and had it shipped to my house. It was a 2006 white v8 and I had it for 3 years. I loved having both of them but didn't buy after the lease because I was well aware how ignorant VW was with these cars. But they still hold a place in my heart. Recently on a trip through Northern California, I ran into a lady driving her sons Phaeton and we had a nice talk about them. He was a mechanic so knew how to keep it going and it still looked beautiful.
