What's the Purpose of Marriage?

I think failing to understand this is precisely why so many get divorced. If you go into marriage thinking you've got an eject button available if something doesn't suite you, well, you haven't really committed have you? Marriage isn't just romance and friendship, it's a commitment.

We see this with children. Particularly if they have been through trauma, they may not truly be vulnerable, instead they may display anti-social behaviours until such a time as they see that you will be there regardless. And then they feel safe and the behaviours change... a major difference between children and adults though is that an adult will just move out and go to spend time with someone else. A Child's tantrum can be contained. An adult's 'tantrum' can be vindictive, malicious or at the very least, far more devastating. In some ways this makes it easier to be a parent than a marriage partner...

Marriage is dead without trust. Love is built up overtime from deeds and actions and not just feeble words that can be said in the moment. Anybody can say I love you but very few mean it when they are faced with difficulties in a relationship. Whereas older generations, like my mothers generation who was a child in WW2 was made of different stuff when they looked up at the skies over London when Hitler sent over the doodlebugs from France to bomb GT. Britain into submission. That moment my mum heard the eerie sounds of the air raid siren going off and that fateful moment the engine sounds of the doodlebug cut out and it suddenly nosedived to bomb London. Worrying will we be dead or alive or will our house be standing or turned into rubble. You see, my mothers generation and people like her stood by their partner in good times and bad and never walked away when most of todays generations want a perfect man but a perfect man doesn’t exist and neither does a perfect woman.

To be honest I think it's the opposite. I'm more likely to tell a stranger who I really am than someone I know I'll have to see again tomorrow and the day after that. Also strangers I don't care if they reject me, but someone I love? I'll want to wear that mask forever.

How does one even prepare for such marriage in the life thus far led? Daily, ordinary life in the Western "democracies" are primarily concerned with the mundane and material side of life with little attention--if any--on the sacred or spiritual side?
To such people money and jobs are "sacred"!

What if the marriage becomes a toxic one way street, and your partner will never compromise? Just stay put and take the abuse all because of a vow?

I'm not sure I agree. I tell people what I'm like all the time and pretty much all of them want nothing to do with me. Of course people run... but that doesn't mean you can't show them that truth. Hiding or not is up to you.

I would suggest not marrying someone unless you know their true face, if they turn out to be someone else after you marry them then the marriage was disingenuous and a sham
