In its new campaign, RNIB is urging everyone to See The Person, Not The Sight Loss. We want to raise awareness of, and dispel misconceptions about blind and partially sighted people.

At its heart, sits an emotive and thought-provoking advert, telling the story of Ava, a fictional teenage girl who is coming to terms with losing her sight. We see the impact that losing her sight has on many areas of her life, from education to relationships. With the help of RNIB, Ava’s friends, family and teachers offer their support, while an RNIB Eye Care Liaison Officer, found at 198 eye clinics across the UK, counsels her post-diagnosis. Ava starts to find her feet again, accepting her condition and regaining confidence.

Absolutely jaw-dropping to hear Videotape on an advert/charity appeal.

(Now I’ve heard the hidden beat that makes the song twice as fast as it sounds, I can’t unhear it!)

Beautiful ad. Also, love the track used; lyrics really fit the narrative. Made me tear up a bit. Love from Radiohead/Thom Yorke fans.

This came on in the cinemas today, and it hit me right in my gut. I've always struggled to share my frustrations, anger and upset when it comes to my sight loss journey. And this helps me tell my story 💙

The best advert I have ever come across. I can relate on every single level with the 'journey' that people with sight loss go through. RNIB are fantastic and I just wish I found them earlier.

Great ad. Raises awareness of a need that is often not recognised in our society

Loved this, im a long cane user, I have one eye which has zero peripheral and always a chance my eye will deteriorate, it's something I will deal with when or if it happens, this ad is brilliant

I found the background music WAY too loud and WAY too distracting as a result... Didn't particularly like the way it was directed either. Don't get me wrong, I have huge respect for the RNIB and even work with them, closely, weekly, in my line of work... But, truthfully, this clip was not my cup of tea.

I literally thought the woman at the end was saying "see the person not the cyclops"

I wish we weren’t in the age of emotionally manipulative advertising. Why must I be put through fear, anxiety and pity in order to feel generous or reach out for help. Personally I prefer advertising thats more rich in information that doesn’t trade my valuable emotions for generosity. When we are subjected to low information high emotional advertising I think we devalue what a human emotion is and what their purpose is. It feels quite dystopian to me. Thanks for the great work you do as a charity but I’d much rather not feel like my emotions are being used to alter my behaviours. I’d like us to be able to do better than this. Does anyone else feel similarly? Also perhaps this ad focussed predominantly on the disability instead of the person despite the title.
