Medial tibial stress syndrome more commonly known as “shin splints” is a condition where pain is felt along the inner edge of the shin bone (Tibia) after activity such as running.

This condition is believed to be caused by:

1. Bone stress from overload
2. Fasciopathy (dysfunction of the fascia tissue which surrounds bone, muscle, nerves, and organs.

Treatment for this condition has been focused on lower leg strengthening of both the dorsiflexors and plantarflexor muscle groups.

In addition to lower extremity strengthening a graded tibial loading program was suggested.
