The greatest meeting of all time ?

I'd say -- the Last Supper.

Hey John, take a look at the more than ten thousand comments on my videos, 90% of which are sharply negative--and then tell me that I'm "white sugar" and that I "never upset the enemies of the Church."

So a Council that contained language that promoted secular humanism and secular utopianism and denied original sin is indisputably traditional Barron?

I said it was the biggest meeting of all time, not the greatest. Someone in my office gave the video this somewhat misleading title.

> "Catholicism reveres tradition and the teachings of the clergy"

Catholicism reveres Sacred Tradition which was part of the Deposit of Faith given by Jesus. It is this Tradition (capital "T") which the Church reveres.

Is that really caused by Vatican II? Or is it the result of increasing secularism in the west since the mid 20th century. Young men are not as devout as they used to be. the secular culture does not encourage vocations. The council itself should not be condemned but rather the cultural upheaval of the times.

I thought you were headed somewhere at first. I too remember before and after the folk masses and the dogma has been "watered down", but then you miss the point of God - why would He send anyone else? - incarnating to come and save us - when this was said both at the Creed and in the last Gospel we genuflected which anchors the point emotively as well as in the body memory. Consider praying the Mass for Trinity Sunday which emphasizes this message of the Traditional Mass.

The Protestant theologian Stanley Hauerwas of Duke University Divinity School has got it exactly right (and YES, as a Catholic, I am quoting a Protestant because he is RIGHT ON THE MONEY with this one):

“That we who worship a crucified God, have become mainstream, is the tragedy.”

Amen and amen. If we were on fire and actually LIVED a radical commitment to Christ and His Bride, the Church we would set the world on "fire" with Christ's love and HAVE the culture of life we so desire instead of

I think questions need to be asked regarding the efficacy of recent attempts at evangelization.  Fr. Barron is likely correct that the 10-20 years following the council demonstrated a weakness at transmitting the faith, but I am not sure how well things are going now either.

Love how he completely, omits one of the main reasons of Vatican II, was to open up new dialogue with the Eastern Orthodox, and to rescind the mutual excommunications of almost 500 he miss something?

The meetings in that fashion dilutes the purpose of having them. Less integrity is weakened. Structural, not social. Excellent Father. God Bless all. Amen.

Could it be said that evangelization can only occur after proper catechesis and learning?  With heresies all the more numerous today than even in the Early Church, I have to wonder how important evangelization is if the people are not properly educated?  Vatican II, to my understanding, has caused a rift in both directions manifested in "gay masses" on the left and sedavacantists on the right.  Frankly, I think the Church did not ensure the true meaning of Vatican II was properly discerned and disseminated before the evangelism was attempted.  This is coming from a former Methodist in RCIA that is contesting much of what the parish tries to tell me in a way of testing their own understanding.  Unfortunately, I have found answers scant.  The Apostles had to walk with Jesus for three years before being entrusted with the Holy Spirit and to begin their mission, and Early Church inductees went through an ancient three-year RCIA to emulate that learning.  We must have a sense of urgency while balancing a true understanding of the faith.

The reason why mercy is such a satisfying message is that we DON'T deserve it. What we deserve is justice, but what we GET is salvation, IF we work out our salvation in fear and trembling and IF we suffer WITH Him. It's not a feel good religion nor a change in the Gospel that I am after. It is salvation - union with God. Hitting people over the head with it will only make you look unloving, unmerciful, rigid, and anachronistic.

Father could you please answer on the previous post on SSPX

Friend, if you really believe that, you are no longer a Catholic.

I think his point, is that unless the question you raise was specifically answered by the Vatican II council, it should be dealt with by a council when it is in session. I think his point is that now is the time to get back to evangelization, and allow the Church to exercise its powers and let it convene to a new council if it thinks necessary.

Fr. Barron, I would definitely agree that we need to be a communio, not an extended concilium. Though I do have a question. Ecumenism, as far as I have read about in the last 50 years, takes place in meetings. Again, I agree that we need to get out of the "meeting mentality", but how do you think that ecumenism could happen outside of the meeting idea? What should post-Vatican II ecumenism look like?
