Things lose conductivity with heat. When I blacksmith I use a magnet to find out when the steal is ready, if it still conducts then it's not ready!

That's nitrogen gas. It makes up something like 70% of our atmosphere (oxygen is something like 20%). We breath it all the time so no, it's not toxic.
