It's precise manufacturing. I'm an engineer, and I can put tight tolerances on the drawing, but it's another thing to actually make it to those tolerances, reliably and on a mass scale.

I always loved how all lego pices are meant to fit. Even tje smallest hole in a pice is meant to be for something else

Even more impressive still is that this precision has stayed consistent for decades - I had pieces from the late 70s that fit just as well with pieces from today as any other.

The classic, iconic chrome lightsaber hilts in the Star Wars sets are reserved for very special sets now because the material they use for the chrome adds a couple too many microns. Microns. That's the tolerance that Lego engineers with.
