D) Left-sided heart failure is the most common cause of right-sided heart failure. In left-sided heart failure, the failing left ventricle causes a backflow of blood that builds up in the pulmonary vasculature, causing pulmonary congestion. Pulmonary congestion eventually causes damage to the pulmonary vasculature, leading to vasoconstriction and remodeling of the vessels, which results in pulmonary hypertension. The resulting pulmonary hypertension causes an increase in the afterload against which the right heart has to pump, leading to a pressure build-up in the right ventricle. Eventually, this pressure buildup causes the right heart to fail.
