3 Essential Things You Should Know for Your 1st BJJ Competition

If you're getting ready for your very 1st BJJ competition I think this video might be useful for you. In the video I share 3 helpful tips you should keep in mind when preparing for your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu tournament or match.

The question comes from our friend Niki who is a powerlifter and is considering doing her 1st BJJ comp.

She was curious if there is anything she needs to know when preparing for the tournament.

In the video I shared 3 ideas that I think would be useful for anyone in Jiujitsu getting ready for a competition.

1. Set your sights on a upcoming competition as early as possible. Know the competition you plan to do and prepare for it. Doing this will give you ample time to get familiar with points, rules, etc.

Because it's important to remember that BJJ competitions are a game. And during that game it's wise to remember that it's not always the person who's best at BJJ wins. It's the person who's best at playing the competition game.

2. Know what you're going to do at the start of the match. Whether it's a takedown or a guard pull you need to know what you plan to do when the match starts.

3. Know your weight class and types of weigh ins. I've almost gotten into trouble with this over the years where I didn't pay attention to weight classes.

If you have a competition coming up I hope this is helpful to you!

I had competed last saturday for the very first time, (white belt). i was very very nervous but at the end of the day i had won all my matches and took gold. i seemed to get tired a lot more quickly during my matches because of adrenaline maybe, but i managed to hang in and take 1st place.

Just finished my first month and love it. Your videos helped me sign up I'm 33 and thought I was to old to roll. Done powerlifting competitively for years and wrestled all my school years but jujitsu was making me nervous. I could not be happier that I joined. Thank you so much for your videos.

Nailed it with that last point. I have a good guard and sub-par takedowns. In my last three tournaments I've pulled into open guard and worked sweeps. Not the last comp but the one before that I accidentally got put into the 215+ division and my first opponent was 265. I still pulled into open guard, hit a single leg x-guard sweep and passed into side control. People told me beforehand "you dont want to be underneath big guys", "id never pull guard on a guy that big", BUT, if you are in control and you are playing your game, they are forced to be defensive. Instead of taking me down and getting on top, he had to try to un weave my legs and break my grips. I was on the bottom, but I was in a dominant position. Id rather take the initiative and control the "fall" and the landing position than get tripped and not be in control. Whatever you do, make sure its you thats doing it.

Just had my first jujitsu competition as a white belt, rolled with one guy lost the match by submission and injured my arm in the process. I see this as a learning experience though and I hope next time I compete I will be more prepared and have a better experience. Win or learn guys 💪

Try not to get yourself too worked up over it. I had been killing it in the gym and everyone was expecting big things from me in my first competition and I pulled guard and held it for 5 minutes. Won on advantage somehow but nerves are crazy

Just had my first NAGA tournament yesterday. I signed up for a 0-6 month white belt skill group, as I've only been training for 2 weeks and I'm rather strong for my weight class. Apparently I was the only one who signed up for 0-6 months, so I was moved to the 6 month to 2 year bracket. Got absolutely dumped on by 4 people who all had over a year and a half as a white belt lol. Learned a lot though.

Competed in my first BJJ tournament this past weekend in Ottawa. I won 1, lost 1. Won a bronze. My 9 year old son was also competing, he lost all 4 matches. He wants to compete in January but those losses crushed him (even though I and his teammates were very encouraging and supportive, he took it hard. Even though they put him in higher weight division) Should I have him hold off, keep training and wait until the summer? Or let him jump back in.
