Whether you're a fan of their music or not, you know a little something about the rock band ZZ Top. Founded in 1969, the long-running blues-inspired trio of Billy Gibbons, Frank Beard, and Dusty Hill entertained fans around the world for more than 50 years — and even after the death of Hill in July 2021, the group plans to continue, with longtime associate Elwood Francis joining the group on bass.

The band has endured the ever-changing landscape of popular music like few bands before them — but even if you don't know anything about that, you almost definitely know the band for their distinctive, flowing beards. What else is there to know about these legends of rock? This is ZZ Top: the untold truth.

My dad took me to see the ZZ Top Afterburner tour at the HemisFair Arena (in San Antonio, TX) on August 22nd, 1986. I was 10 years old at the time and it was beyond awesome! When we got inside the arena my dad tells me "If it's too loud, we can put cigarette butts in your ears." The stage looked like the dashboard of a car and they used fog to obscure Billy and Dusty's entrance from below the stage. Before the encore, they both spun their guitars while they were obscured by fog again as they exited the stage the way they came in. When it was time for the encore, the front of the dashboard dropped down and revealed a more futuristic dashboard. They also had a huge 2D Pharaoh's head with sunglasses and it shot lasts out of it's eyes onto mirrors on the floor.

R.I.P. Dusty Hill

ZZ Top’s first album has some of the raunchiest and nastiest riffs I’ve ever heard. They are legends. RIP DUSTY!

Thanks for all the good times and great music for the last 50+ years. Only a true stud can last that long in the music business and never lose a step. RIP brother, you've earned it.

Billy Gibbons was awesome on Bones" and I always looked forward to seeing him when he did appear. And I can still listen to any ZZ Top song No matter how many times I've heard it and or how old it is, still crank it up and drive down the road singing it

My first live concert was ZZ Top in Massachusetts in 1983. We were sitting to the right front of the stage about 10 or 12 rows up. They were wicked loud, sounded great and put on a great show. I'll never forget it.
