From a secular point of view, the only reason someone would have to believe in an afterlife is: Fear of death, delusions and hallucinations, etc. Having looked at extensively, I got over my fear of death before I believed that consciousness survives our body.

I’m 72. When I was around 4 years old. I would lay in bed and tell my body to relax and focus on what I would describe as Christmas lights. I would do this until I felt a rumbling in my body as if it was shaking then a flash of white light and a popping sound. That’s when the fun started. I would just think of where I wanted to be and I was there. There was a muted glow around me and everything I interacted with was alive. Trees, rocks they all seemed to be like the seaweed in the ocean coving with the tide. This happened multiple times. I looked at myself in a mirror and all I saw was a white shimmering light. Since that time I have never been afraid of death. I went on to serve in the military and later as a first responder in fire and rescue. When someone died around me I was never sad but felt a sense of relief and joy that they were finally able to go home.

Actually modern religions became popular because they offered an afterlife giving a new hope, it was just a better offer than the previous ones. At 24 i know will just accept my death knowing that i will have carried my father's memory in my heart, it's been 20 years now and i will keep it untill my last day of life not caring whether there is heaven or not
