How to Learn Number Theory

In this video I go over a book that I read to help teach myself some Number Theory. I have never taken a course in number theory and I was able to read this book and learn some of the material on my own.

The book is called Elementary Introduction to Number Theory and is written by Calvin T. Long.

I'm taking a break from calculus. So I decided to do a bit of number theory.
So here's a funny story. I live out in the boonies, the closest bookstore to me is a half hour drive.
A couple weeks ago I asked Peter, the propieter of this store to order for me " Number Theory " by George E. Andrews ( Dover books, love them).
So, the other day I had to go into town for another reason.
I wasn't expecting my book to be in yet, but I thought I would check.
As soon as I walked in there and went to the checkout, Peter was pulling some books out that just arrived.
Lo and behold, my book was right there... lol...
Deus Volt...!
Its time to study number theory!

Have you heard of "A Friendly Introduction to Number Theory" By Silverman? That's the one I used and it was super readable with easy exercises. This one seems more sophisticated, though

My favourite number theory book is An Introduction to the Theory of Numbers by G.H. Hardy and E.M. Wright. It is just brilliant. It is really tough to read though. But it goes sooo much in depth that it really pays off.

I was lucky since at my university a lot of these topics are taught in our first year abstract algebra course

Books that are easy to follow and easy to read are the best in my opinion because you can grasp the concepts and learn the content a lot easier and it does wonders with comprehension as well

Believe that course involves cryptography, in which two students work together (assigned by the professor) and there is a lot of proofs. Taking discrete math will certainly help a student if that student plans to take Number Theory, but at the undergrad level or any first course in Number Theory, a student could manage it without any prerequisite, just need mathematical maturity, though it seems they assume you take Linear Algebra (since I have seen the instructor doing matrix operation as if students should have known it)

What would you suggest for a self study curriculum for number theory, abstract algebra and cryptography? Also any courses?

I checked out this video because my daughter is about to take this class...and as I suspected, it scrambled my brains 😂 I think I'll go back to collecting antique glass and refinishing furniture 😂 good luck to all you math people, because I DON'T GET IT! Lol
