Fact 83

Bald eagles are large birds of prey native to North America. Since 1782, the bald eagle has been the united states national emblem and mascot. The bald eagle isn't actually bald; it gets its name because its white head against its dark brown body makes it seem bald from a distance

Eagles are monogamous, family oriented birds. And they are strong and brave and defend their territory agaist all threats. I wish America would aspire more towards that, instead if being the world's police to iur own detrument. Home matters most!

Another interesting thing, bald eagles' heads are dark until they become an adult.
We were watching a bunch of them at Starved Rock in Illinois then saw one swoop down and grab and fish but instead of flying off it actually got pulled under!!  A bunch of us stared at each other and asked if bald eagles swam.  Nobody knew.  After a long time it popped out then flew to a nearby sheet of ice.  I heard they are going after the Asian Carp which are much bigger than the normal fish so often they can't handle the weight and because of the hook shape of their talons it's difficult for them to disengage.

Why the Bald Eagle almost went extinct in this country. DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane), an insecticide with widespread use, built up in adult eagles and caused them to lay thin-shelled eggs that cracked before the chicks could hatch.

Bald eagles can't actually make that noise featured in most movies with them in it. The scream-call belongs to the falcon family of birds. Bald eagles instead make really cute sounds, worth looking up. :)

another interesting fact is that they are usually very even tempered around poeple, compared to other raptors.even wild ones..so long as you do not aproach thier nests...in fact sometimes wild eagles will even act friendly toward fishermen in hopes of getting food.
eagles are also very monogamous and consistent animals, and if a person can actually befriend one, unless they betray that trust that person will likely have a friend for life in that eagle.
