Repair any drive with these simple instructions.
Simply peel the plastic cover and rearrange the spin mechanism cover as shown.
There are older models that do not share this configuration.
I have repaired several of these drives including a BD player DVD-RW combo unit.
Haven't tried newer models but if you have make sure to let me know.
Enjoy and thank you for watching.

I own a Plextor that had been sitting for 4 years... it was otherwise in mint condition and everything worked prior to storage.. When I placed it into a new machine just now, it suffered the same fate - dc tray failed to eject.. When I removed the housing, it worked, return to its casing, didn't work. I troubleshooted the problem to be the spindle balancer / centralizer as in your instructional video. Doing your fix failed to fix and I also learnt that the magnet is not in the head of my Plextor. It has the magnet on the inside track / laser mechanism. I removed the top plate as in your instructions, and placed double sided tape where the magnet would otherwise be (as in yours).. It worked as yours did.. I guess with mine, the magnet couldn't pull it as tight, AND now, the CD/DVD tray ejects as it should. Great instructional video.. Yours was the ONLY solution I could find to resolve my problem caused by the magnetic head.. MANY THANKS..

This is great and it totally works for when the tray motor is too weak to push the tray out anymore after years of usage. Thank you very much for sharing!

Awesome hack! "Fixed" mine with a piece of plastic cut from a yogurt lid, inserted between the metal and the plastic. Works for now.

The "right" way to fix this is to replace the tray belt, but I suppose this is probably an okay way to get the drive working again in a pinch. These BenQ designs (including yours, which appears to be a Lite-On LH-(16/18/20)(A/W)1(P/S/H/L) family drive - or "1 drive" for short, which seems to be a BenQ design, and are also a bit annoying in that the PATA ones seem identical to the "4 drives" and the SATA ones to the "7 drives", but that's kind of irrelevant) were kind of infamous for tray belt issues. The BenQ DW1640 was particularly terrible in this regard, but Lite-On "1 drives" can certainly suffer from this same issue.

Many other drives from PLDS (Lite-On, BenQ, many Plextor, Asus, Sony, Philips, HP, Teac, AOpen...), TSST (Toshiba, Samsung), Pioneer, and some others do share this same design and can use the same fix, but one thing to keep in mind is that HL-DT-ST (LG) drives tend to often be different, with the magnet in the spindle table and just a piece of steel in the clamper. The same fix may work, just be aware that the construction is somewhat different. In addition, the cover over the clamper is also hidden under the label on many drives. The "1 drives" like yours are a bit unusual in that they have the label on the bottom, but it's trivial to slice through the label anyway.

What if my old laptop DVD drive makes a very loud buzzing sound after closing? (even with no disc inside)

usually on the older drives it is the belt that is slipping..

Mine, I tried to write files (ISO file 6.5GB size) to my DVD-DL but after 100% burned, I check this DVD-DL cylinder (i don't know if it is called cylinder), but no mark of written from it. I tried also to let my DRW-Rom to read a DVD with files already written and this DRW-Rom is blinking for few seconds and I open it from Computer, but he can't read, what just happened is lag. Sorry for my Bad English.

hey, I have a drive that was working but in a frustrated moment I smack it with a controller and made a dent on the aluminum near the little circle. The drive makes allot of chuckle noise, do u believe it would be the little circle that's the problem?
