How long should your sentences be?

The American Press Institute investigated how comprehension varies with sentence length. They found that:
- For 8 words or less, readers understood 100% of the information.
- For sentences that were 14 words long, readers understood 90%.
- For sentences that were 43 words or longer, comprehension dropped to less than 10%.
- But for technical communication and academic writing,15-20 word sentences are most effective.
- And varying sentence lengths helps to maintain the reader’s attention.

Really great tips Doctor Shaene! Sentence construction is really important, I will direct my students towards the video. There is so much more to essay writing than the mere 'writing' of it!
