Rip currents can be so strong that swimming straight back to the shore isn't possible. Stay calm and swim parallel to the shore if you get stuck in one.

Wish i would have seen this when i almost died in the virgin islands lol. This works though for sure. I was panicking and swimming against it until my best friend said to swim parrallel like this. I could have easily beem swept away and ran over by a nearby yacht. We sailed to an empty island, so we werent tgat close to anyone. It was pretty dang scary not gonna lie

be careful, swimming parallel doesn't always work because rip currents don't always go straight out to sea, they follow the shape of sand banks which can sometimes be diagonal, so if you just choose to swim parallel to the shore you might be still swimming against the rip current and not be able to get out of it. I'd recommend waiting several seconds and tracking your real direction of travel in the rip current using your eyes to track visiual markers on the shore then use that to tell you which direction to swim get out of the current . But even then, sometimes you might just need to let yourself be dragged out until the ripcurrent weakens
