Here is a link to download a pdf copy of slides from the lecture "Critical State Soil Mechanics for Dummies" from Professor Paul Mayne from Georgia Tech University (...given in 2006). Thanks for the great information, Dr. Mayne!

In this lesson, I introduce the basic concepts related to critical state soil mechanics (CSSM). I discuss the relationship between consolidation behavior and shear strength behavior of soil. The critical state line (CSL) is introduced, and its relationship with the normal consolidation line (NCL) and the unload/reload line (URL) is discussed. The idea of yield surfaces is introduced.

I'm about to start my MS in Civil Engineering at USC. Your video might be a good kick start for my first year.

Wow...it's interesting for a one who is jumping in to this matter for the 1st time...your jokes keeps me awaken as I'm listening to it at 12 a.m after the load of works with baby.thank you FROM SRI LANKA.., 🇱🇰

One of the best lecture series for CSM. I was searching for days to find a good explanation. This is excellent!

I have studied this topic in MEng. UNSW. Loved it. You have have explained it in very good way. Good stuff. Keep up.👍

I didnt quite understand at 29:54 very well. About the yield surface shrinking. So the stress path has crossed the failure envelope, and the yield surface's new P'c shifts to the left? Is that right?

Your lectures are amazing. I am really grateful.

Min 17:20 you said: "Soil failure occurs when the stress/load path reaches the CSL". If you have dilation in a dense sand (for example) the peak shear strength will be located at soil failure, and that point will be higher than those in the critical state line. Am I correct?

I want to ask a question.I have calculated Fs from Michalowski’s (2002) 1.875 and I have calculated Fs=2.047 from slope stability program. What is the reason of this difference?

I still break my head
Why should we study CSMM
Mohr coulomb failure theory will no be sufficient?
