I see in the comments that there is a lot of talk about the British here. But the truth is that Gene Hackman is portraying the Polish general Sosabowski here, and the situation was meant to show the fantasy of the Polish soldier.
Interesting fact: The 1st Independent Parachute Brigade (the name of the Polish unit), was created to land in occupied Poland. Instead, they were sent on a mission that they opposed and were accused of being overly ambitious. During the operation, they were used, among other things, to cover the withdrawing forces, there were no more boats for them and they had to stay on the German shore. It is estimated that the unit lost 25% of its combat strength.
