How to replace a Battery on a 13" Macbook Air Retina A1932 EMC 3184.

This is a step by step video that will show you how to replace the part from start to finish.

This guide is valid for the following models:

13” MacBook Air Retina 2018 (A1932) EMC 3184
13” MacBook Air Retina 2019 (A1932) EMC 3184

*This guide can also work for MacBook Air 2020 A2179 EMC 3302 but please note that the speakers each have a screw now and the trackpad is accessible without removing the logic-board.

I highly recommend you disconnect the track pad cable rather than trying to just slide the battery underneath it!! It is incredibly easy to disconnect! If you instead try to slide the battery out like in the video there is a great chance you will tear the track pad cable. I’m here writing this comment cause my dad followed these instructions and did just that! Just take the few seconds and do it right! You already have the rest of the stuff dissembled, why cut corners at the most delicate part of the process??

Conversely, the suggestion at 2:01 to remove those two screws “that are securing the battery to the MacBook” is completely wrong! Those screws DO NOT attach the battery to the MacBook! They only serve to hold that chip to the batteries! Removing them is pointless! You can see as he removes the battery that there are no holes underneath in the MacBook for them to even go into. It is literally pointless to remove them. Use the time from this step to instead disconnect the trackpad cable!

Thanks for the tutorial! I was able to bring a dead Macbook Air back to life after changing out the battery. I didn't have much luck doing the spinning thing for the stretchy tape, I had more luck just gently pulling with my fingers and using even pressure. Thank you!

Thank you, but. Thanks for this tutorial. I have mostly used i-fix-it with confidence but they have you disconnecting EVERYTHING and removing the logic board just to replace a battery. Then I get down to the end and one logic board screw won't come out! Stripped or something. So I went searching and found this. I've been fixing Macs for a decade or more and could not believe this process.

Here comes the I also trashed my trackpad cable. I did have it disconnected from the logic board as part of the i-fix-it steps, but enough of the adhesive strips failed to come out cleanly that it took effort to free the battery and it destroyed the cable.

So, people, be careful.

Great Video, but shouldn't you add the 3 adhesive strips under the left and right battery after testing that the battery is charging properly?

Be very careful folks with the thin black trackpad cable (3:30 in the video), it is super easy to damage as you try to remove the battery from the laptop. If it gets sliced, the keyboard/trackpad won't work.

Not sure if it's already been said but there are additional pull tabs at the top of the speakers in between logic board and speaker.. You can reach them with tweezers.

My battery is held down with T4 - (not T5) screws. Be careful which battery you buy because mine came with only a T5 screwdriver. Had to run to my shop for a T4 to get the battery loose. Otherwise, spot on. A1932 MacBook 13".

Thanks for the very clear "how to". This, combined with my experience changing the battery on an older MacbookAir gave me the confidence to attempt this one. But I quickly realized this model requires more experience than I have. After opening up the back and attempting to remove the right speaker, I decided I'd likely trash my MacBookAir. It seems very easy to break things in there. So I closed it up and took it to an Apple Approved repair center.

There are two ways that the battery can slide under that ribbon cable, one way is a lot tighter than the other, be real careful, if you do pull on the ribbon cable too much, it actually gets pulls out - the end of it is a connector underneath the mouse track pad. You can get underneath it and push it back in, but its a real pain to get to it.
