Sikh murder row: How India-Canada ties descended into a public feud - BBC News

The escalating row over the murder of a Sikh separatist leader has the potential to derail years of close relations between Canada and India, two key strategic partners on security and trade.

The rift burst into the open on Monday when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada was investigating "credible allegations" about the potential involvement of Indian government agents in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia in June.

India responded furiously - it "completely rejected" the allegations, calling them "absurd". Both have expelled one of the other's diplomats and it's unclear how they now pull back from the brink.

Just a few months ago, the countries were making progress towards signing a free trade agreement - long in the works - this year. Now, talks are paused and an imminent Canadian trade mission to India postponed.

One thing is being misunderstood here, India never considered all Sikhs as a threat to the state. India considers only Khalistani as a threat to India. And surely not all Sikh wealth is Khalistani!

If Hardeep Singh Nijjar is considered a Sikh leader and activist then it could be argued that Osama Bin Laden was also seen as a leader and activist.

this journalist is saying : " I heard this, I heard that " . What an easy job ! You don't need thorough research.

Sikhs are integral part of India. We have so much diversity in India.

The fact that she says that India views this entire religious group as a threat is absolutely untrue.
It demonstrates how little she knows on this subject.
I wonder if she has even been to India.
She really has to be more responsible with her words.

How misinformed this correspondent is. She's equating the whole sikh religious group in Canada with 'separatists' in the eyes of India whereas the thing is there is a separatist group with small population within the Sikh community over there. Not sure where do they bring these unprofessional people from. They should not report if they don't understand something.

I am glad BBC is not the only source of information for people to understand complex issues today. What a propaganda machine this organisation has been.

‘ alleged’ is the key word. Canada says they will investigate further. Then why so much drama without proofs??

If Canadian govt doesn't care about India's territorial integrity why should Indian govt care about Canada's sovereignty 🤔🤔

The BBC has a way with words and sure it believes it does understand the difference between activist and separatist.

3:45 “India views this entire religious group as basically a threat to its interests”
What? Is she even for real? Does she even know what she’s talking about?

Few Canadians want to impose sanctions on India.
India's bilateral trade with Canada is $8 billion, which is even less than our trade with some African nations, e.g., $14 billion with Nigeria.

We ignored the possible threat of sanctions from the US and Europe by not stopping trade with Russia; in fact, we increased it, after Russia invaded Ukraine, and Canadians think we care about their sanctions!

I am shocked that the BBC is relying on the comments by the lady journalist whose comments are essentially couched in “if and buts”

😂Apart from expelling the Canadian diplomat, India has also given him 5 days to leave. 1 day to leave and 4 days just in case the plane breaks down. 😂

Off the coast of Ireland in the late evening of 23 June 1985, a rescuer from the British Royal Air Force retrieved a doll from the site of an airplane wreck. Frustrated at first since he thought many people needed to be rescued, he would soon realise that every passenger was lifeless. Among them was the sari-clad body of an older woman, split in two, and joined only by her intestines. He watched her float away, the image haunting him for the rest of his life.

On that fateful day, Air India Flight 182 disintegrated mid-air on its way from Canada to India, causing the death of all 329 members on board. It was an unthinkable act of mass murder, orchestrated by Sikh extremists at the height of the Khalistan movement — and the deadliest act of aviation terrorism before 9/11.
