that lower two-tone call really sounds like a didgeridoo. i love how accurately that instrument can portray australian wildlife!!

I just clicked on the sound recording out on my deck on the South Coast and some boobooks immediately answered back. Amazing to have such incredible wildlife so close.

My boyfriend and I were laying in bed wondering what we could hear out our window, now we know! Thanks for the video. Such a beautiful sounding bird!

I just heard one in some trees near my place late at night. I haven’t heard one for 2 years here, I’m glad one is back.

It’s 1.20am & I’m just listening to this owl in the Hornsby area! That’s really cool to know which owl it is.
No crickets except the ringing in my ears

They are a native owl of N.Z we call them morepork owl. They are very sacred to maori people. They were spiritual guides/protectors to my ancestors. They would warn them of intruders and give them messages by flying low to the ground and swirling the dirt giving signals. They are so abundant where my tribe come from so when I heard one in my back yard in Brisbane just after returning from my mother's passing, I thought I was going mad, she loved them.

Thank you for these recordings.

Looks like I have at least one of these in the trees near my house. Perfectly still morning, no sun yet, no cars but clear two tone call followed by the "Yeow" call they make.

Lucky enough to have these guys and the Powerful Owl here for night time ambience.

I used to hear these Owl's going all night in one of the suburbs I lived in south of Brisbane for several years. During COVID everything was just dead silent at night, barely any traffic and noise pollution. These fella's would always start up around 10pm and stop around 11pm and return at 2am and continue. I absolutely loved hearing them. One of them would always roost in the big tree behind our house. Suddenly one year they stopped, not sure what happened? I never heard them again :(

I also saw and heard a small owl making this distinctive two note call in a suburban street in Wodonga this evening. I could see it was an owl and a brown colour but I did not know what. Now I do. Thank you so much. I stood there in awe for several minutes and listened until it flew away.

Hearing one in Bonny Hills just south of Port Macquarie at 10pm. Have heard them in our reserve previously and used your video to confirm thier identity. So comforting to know the wildlife is still free to wander despite the things happening to people at the moment.

Laying I bed awake in the wee small hours I heard our little mopoke calling last night. One of my very favourite bush sounds. Probably hunting for mice around my aviaries.

Thank you so much for sharing this video! I’ve been wondering for so long what that trilling sound was now I know it’s the juvenile boobooks 😊❤
