How To Capture Long Exposures With Your iPhone

Have you ever seen a great photo that screams for a longer exposure … but you can’t set up your filter system? Maybe you’re traveling with family and friends, or maybe you don’t have your full camera kit with you. If you are using a modern iPhone and iOS, try out the Live Photo feature in the Camera app. Live Photo captures a short video and the Photos app lets you convert that to a long exposure. It’s quite slick and you can still capture that long exposure even when you’re without your beloved filters.

Hey Scott, I did not know about Long Exposure with iPhone. I shoot only in RAW so that might explain it. This is great and I look forward to trying it out. Also, there is an in-between option. I take my iPhone and also have a small tripod with iPhone mount and 3rd party ND filers for the iPhone. Then with the pro controls, I use LR with the PRO controls (Manual) and then can use the iPhone similar to my Sony. Obviously, this requires some extra gear and thought, but far lighter and smaller to carry than my Sony kit plus the results are in Raw and can be processed in LR CC for complete control. I love photography today far more than when I took it up in the late 70s. Keep the ideas coming😎🤙

Perfect timing Scott. I just picked up an iPhone 13 Pro and it's camera capabilities are terrific. Would enjoy your review of the various camera apps out there that provide more exposure control, such as ProCamera and Halide. Regardless, thanks for review!

Thanks Scott very informative as usual. I use my promax a lot and have set my camera mode on ProRaw all the time. I find it annoying when I use live mode and the raw is switched off. I’m puzzled since you can shoot 4k video. This also happens in Slo-Mo where the camera resets to HD. Probably apple holding raw in these modes for future version of iPhones. Thanks.
