Wearing a surgical mask may seem easy, but do you know what are the Dos and Don'ts? Watch this video to learn the proper steps to wearing one and the mistakes to avoid.

Wear and remove a surgical mask:
Step 1: Wash your hands
before wearing
your mask.
Step 2: Hold the mask through
the ear loops
with the coloured
side facing outwards.
Step 3: Ensure your
mouth, nose and
chin are covered.
Step 4: Pinch the metal
edge of the mask
so that it presses
gently on your
nose bridge.
Step 5: Remove used mask
by holding only
the ear loops.
Step 6: Dispose used mask
into the bin.
Step 7: Wash your hands
with soap and water.

Well, I've been wearing mine upside down the entire time. Totally misunderstood what the metal ridge was for. Great video, thanks

The other thing you should do apart from placing the the metal ridge on your nose is to make sure the pleating (meaning the folds of the fabric) faces towards the ground on the the outside as you wear it, as to not trap any dust or particles. That means that in most, if not all, of the masks tbe colored side (i.e. green, blue e.t.c.) should be on the outside.

Thanks a lot xoxo
Also, do you think it's safe for me and my mom to go to Italy (Sicily, Palermo) to visit my grandparents (I'm in the UK, Birmingham) at the start of August? I'm really worried about it but my mom said she already booked the tickets so we have to go.

Question: if the blue side is water repellent (hydrophobic) why is it more porous than the white side? The white side seems to be a non porous material which by definition and observation shouldn't allow liquid or particles to pass through. By putting the white side against you face it may be able to be more difficult to breathe. As for putting the blue side against your face you'll notice that the blue side absorbs more moisture because it's more porous (hydrophilic) thus keeping the white side from becoming soaked and keeping it's filtering properties. It is also easier to breathe with the blue side against your face. Just a thought and observation.

It looks like she has the lighter/white side facing out. Does it matter which side faces out? What is the measurable difference between each side?
I am sure, when I had surgery in the spring that everyone AT THE HOSPITAL was wearing them with the white side out. I must admit though that for me the colors are so subtle I can't always tell the difference between the two sides. Sigh.

Shouldn't the pockets face outside

Wrong. This is not how it is meant to be used. Even most health professionals wear it incorrectly.
