HEADLINE: Liz Cheney loses Wyoming seat to pro-Trump rival
1. SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Liz Cheney, (R) Wyoming:
"Two years ago, I won this primary with 73% of the vote. I could easily have done the same again. The path was clear, but it would have required that I go along with President (Donald) Trump's lie about the 2020 election. It would have required that I enable his ongoing efforts to unravel our democratic system and attack the foundations of our Republic. That was a path I could not and would not take. (applause) No, no House seat, no office in this land is more important than the principles that we are all sworn to protect. And I well understood the potential political consequences of abiding by my duty. Our Republic relies upon the goodwill of all candidates for office to accept honorably the outcome of elections. And tonight, Harriet Hageman has received the most votes in this primary. She won. I called her to concede the race. This primary election is over. But now the real work begins."
ANNOTATION: Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, Donald Trump's fiercest Republican adversary in Congress, lost to a Trump-backed rival in a GOP primary Tuesday.
ANNOTATION: Cheney conceded the race to Harriet Hageman but vowed to continue to oppose any Trump run for president.
ANNOTATION: Cheney added: "I have said since January 6th that I will do whatever it takes to ensure Donald Trump is never again anywhere near the Oval Office."

STORYLINE:
Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, Donald Trump’s fiercest Republican adversary in Congress, was defeated in a GOP primary Tuesday, falling to a rival backed by the former president in a contest that reinforced his grip on the party’s base.

The third-term congresswoman and her allies entered the day downbeat about her prospects, aware that Trump’s backing gave Harriet Hageman considerable lift in the state where he won by the largest margin during the 2020 campaign.
Cheney was already looking ahead to a political future beyond Capitol Hill that could include a 2024 presidential run, potentially putting her on another collision course with Trump.

Cheney described her loss as the beginning of a new chapter in her political career as she addressed a small collection of supporters, including her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, on the edge of a vast field flanked by mountains and bales of hay.
Cheney pointed out that she won the Wyoming Congressional primary with 73% of the vote two years ago, and said she could have done it again.
But, she said "it would have required that I go along with President (Donald) Trump's lie about the 2020 election. It would have required that I enable his ongoing efforts to unravel our democratic system and attack the foundations of our Republic. That was a path I could not and would not take."
