When ever I get back to this piece, I imagine what it must have been like more than 300 years ago. Sitting in church, hearing those opening lines, the tension keeps building, the volume rising, and then it all breaks down, and you hear - Herr, Herr, Herr! It must have been impossible not to be moved with certainty that there in fact is a Lord up above.

One of the most beautiful, involving Pieces ever written. Perfect conjunction of technical, counterpointal mastery and dramatic expression, I always start the Holy Week by listening to it: it captures the atmosphere of the period like nothing else. No wonder Bach is considered to be THE absolute Master.

Almost unbearably moving. I'd just been reading about the anti-Nazi White Rose resistance movement of WWII, and the fates that befell some of their number. This music restored my spirit - thank you for sharing it
