Bach - Cantate Nun danket alle Gott BWV 192 - Sato | Netherlands Bach Society

'Nun danket alle Gott' is the shortest but one of the most festive cantatas Bach wrote, thanks to Martin Rinkarts' cheerful chorale text. In this cantata, performed under the direction of Shunske Sato for All of Bach, Bach pulls out all the stops. Alongsides the strings, Bach also wrote parts for two oboes and two flutes, and the opening chorus is a complete and utter spectacle. The festivities continue uninterrupted in the subsequent duet for soprano and bass and in the energetic closing chorale.

We can hear Bach trying new ideas here--extended harmonic sentences, unexpected progressions, surprising melodic intervals and that conceit he grew more and more fond of--the "media res, " beginning in the seeming middle of a conversation or train of thought, complete with chords far from home, dissonance that eludes immediate resolution, etc. I truly love the honor of sharing this brilliant man's achievements, from musicians who really know and love Bach, as well.

Brilliant performance, one I will listen to many times here in Northern California. As a singer, I like looking at the singers' mouths as they form vowels we don't use in English. One choir master I had (American, lived in Germany) trained us to sing German without opening our mouths as much as we do speaking English! As for the casual dress, I'm all for it. It's a recording session, not a paid performance. More relaxing for all involved to perform in their own clothes. A recording session is difficult enough, so why not be comfortable? Thank you, musicians, I love you all!

Great performance. I also appreciate the way the musicians are dressed. Stuffy formal attire is yet another barrier that says that this music is only for the elite. I see this trend in some other performance groups.
