Bach - Cantata Nun ist das Heil und die Kraft BWV 50 - Van Veldhoven | Netherlands Bach Society

There are more unknowns about 'Nun ist das Heil und die Kraft', performed here by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, than knowns. Is it a separate piece or was it part of something else? For what occasion did Bach write it? Is the eight-voice version actually by Bach, or has someone else adapted Bach's perhaps original five-part version into a double-choir work? The piece remains shrouded in mystery.

Ah! I recall that as a 9 or 10 year old chorister in my home cathedral back in the early 60's we performed this Cantata. The single movement, double chorus and very complicated for, at least my young mind, and I remember having to count the breaks carefully.
We rehearsed it a few times with piano and on the afternoon of the public performance we practised it with the orchestra. When we came to the moment at 00:54 where the second chorus comes in with the full orchestra with the trumpets and drums thrown in, (something we were not expecting) we dried up and stopped. We were suddenly drowned out and realised that we would have to bellow out our parts. The second time around it was so much better.
The evening performance in the cathedral went well with Cantata 50 the finale of the concert. When we successfully all came to the end, mercifully at the same time, there was something like a three second pause and then the audience stood up and were applauding and cheering. Something unknown to us at our concerts.
Cantata 50 is VERY special; a delight to sing with its complexities, and this performance brought back the memories of my early days, and made my enjoyment of this performance even better. Thank you.

When I hear this chorus, I feel so powerful and strong ! For me, this is one of the most impressive work from Bach. It's a real inspiration, and every time I hear that, I feel confident and have faith in God, in music and in my project.

Awwww, I love this chorus. First heard it from a recording I got on vinyl back in the 1980's at the back end of Bach's Magnificat. What a treat to listen and watch a performance on the web. What a great world we live in. And I love to watch the organist "Bach Out". Great stuff.
