This is coming from someone who owns a 2021 BMW M5 Competition and has driven the Model S Plaid. Let me just out it out there that you don’t buy an M5 because of some “emotional connection”, you buy it because you like the engine sound, the performance, the amount of ways you can upgrade the car, etc. You buy a Tesla because you want good tech and because you want instant torque combined with a really fast acceleration. Also, I don’t want to see anyone saying that the Tesla smokes the M5 until it goes around a corner. Teslas are still really good around corners and WOULD smoke an M5. In the end though, it comes down to what you prefer; a well built, really fast sports car or an electric supercomputer that can do 0-60 in 2.2 seconds (not 1.99).

I think a majority of the emotional connection for car guys is the handling of the car, winding out gears, the sound, and the response the car gives you. I think saying the plaid is better than an M5 comp is ignoring the reason the M5 was built and focusing on why the plaid was built. For someone who wants to drift and flick a car around, feel the power band, and have a great sounding car the M5 would be better. It’s just a matter of what you’re looking for.

I'm a car guy and I think most of us agree that car guys like to work on their cars. Upgrade them, customize the power train. When someone spends hundreds of hours on a vehicle there is a soul there when it fires up.
