Earthworks SR40V Review with Singing Sample.

My friend bought one of these on my recommendation. As we continue to use it to record vocals for his music, I continue to be stunned by the performance of this mic.

After I sent this video to a friend of mine he bought one of these mics. He finally brought it over for me to record him with. I set him up the way he would do a live acoustic gig. The SR40V was about a foot above his guitar and aimed up a bit towards his mouth. The rejection of the guitar in the vocal track was amazing. There was just a small amount of his Taylor that got into the vocal track, and nowhere near enough to cause a problem. The sound of his voice in the recording was amazing. We recorded him in my untreated living room, and I could have easily used what that mic was feeding into my Apollo Twin in a final mix, and it would have sounded great. Honestly, I was amazed by how good, clean, and detailed the signal was. One other thing. Mr. Browne is exactly right when he says this mic gives you no mascara. I was sitting a few feet away from my friend when we recorded and the Earthworks SR40V provided an audio signal for my system to record that reproduced exactly what I heard when I played it back. Again, amazing. One word of warning. If you have a singing voice like I do, this mic might frustrate you because it will allow you to hear exactly what you sound like. In my case that is not so good, however, it will absolutely show you when you are singing something that sounds good and when you are not. The first step to becoming a better singer is to learn what you are doing wrong. Oh, also, I just would like to disagree with Mr. Browne about the case. If I were to spend a grand on this vocal mic, I would be very happy to have a strong padded travel case for my mic. The case that is provided with this mic is a VERY smart idea for anyone who would get this mic to take on the road. Anyway, if you are interested in having the best mic for getting your real voice into a sound system or a recording, I simply do not know of a better choice you could make that will do both jobs as well as this mic.

Fantastic review! I just discovered this microphone, and after watching this review I’m sold. We’ve been using the Shure SM58’s and the SR40V will be a phenomenal upgrade. Thanks for putting so much effort into showing the pros and cons of this mic!

I've used this mic live in rock n roll. I find it is a superb instrument. However, on the louder stages, I found that I had to eq out most of what makes this mic unique. It's low-frequency response. Got a lot of 200 Hz hum/noise out of it from stage volumes. However, on the quieter [in ear monitor] stages, I was able to use most of the freq response without issue. So there ya go. You never get something for nothing.

I would love to see you compare it to the new Earthworks SR117. I have reached out to Earthworks to see if the SR40V has been discontinued and they said it had and the the SR117 is the best live performance mic they have ever offered. I would love to see what you think.

Many thanks for your outstanding reviews! If there's one thing I have against the SR40V it's the noise floor. Not an issue or a deal breaker when the mic is used as intended, but given the price I think Earthworks could have scrunched the numbers some. Thanks again!

OK... sounds fantastic. clean, precise... superb low frequency, even though it might make it a bit of a handful for the uninitiated! And the only word for the top end is smooth and uncoloured (the only TWO words....) What a microphone! But what a price!

re the mesh, interested to know if they could have used a sintered metal screen, as used by Aston mids on their Starlight pencil condensers.
