The lessons of history teach that appeasing aggressive dictators doesn't lead to long term peace, it leads to the opposite.

Don't forget the most obvious and valuable benefit is having Ukraine do the dirty work for the US so that we don't have to test our own troops and weapons against Russia in a conflict. Russia has shown their cards while fighting against another nation. The value of that INTEL is incalculable. Ukraine has also done us the favor of not only exposing Russia's weaknesses, but also depleted their inventories and numbers of men who can fight. Now we get to see N Korea as well. We also get to see the evolution of battle with new tactics like the use of small drone implementation against systems that have been rendered vulnerable. (Ships, tanks, armor, personnel.)

no one ever promised that nato would not expand. Gorbachev verified this before he died

Let’s be clear. Many weapons have an expiry date. In many cases, the US would actually have had to pay to decommission these weapons.

You say that "NATO added...xxx countries"
This, from my view, sets a view that is Putin's view, BUT, NATO doesn't "add countries", countries _ASK TO JOIN NATO!_
By 2004, Putin's Idea of a "greater Russia" are taking hold, and small countries in the area... well, I lived in Finland, and in 2005, they said:" when you are lying next to a sleeping bear, you need to be ready to move if he wakes up!"
These countries adjacent to Russia could feel the bear waking up, and looked for something more than *_empty promises of OLD TREATIES THAT RUSSIA SIGNED_*

This war has taught the following:

If you want safety, own nukes, as many as you can

Dont depend on others for your defense, no one will come to your aid

Have your own independent arms industry

The Chieftain perceptively pointed out that the M1 Abrams has British Armor, a German main gun, Belgian machineguns, and the crew's side arms are Italian. (Although recent changes may mean that they are Austrian.)

The equivalent to asking Zelenski for 350 billion is this: you donate a $2500 30 year old pickup to a college student. Then you spend 100k buying yourself a brand new pickup at the dealership you own, and decide you actually loaned the college student the money and it was 250k. Then put a lein on the kids house for 250k when all the kid got was an old truck you said was a gift.

I would say your discussion of Euromaidan, Maidan, and the Revolution of Dignity, is so brief as to be incorrect. If you want to boil it down to one line, while the Orange Revolution was about political corruption, EuroMaidan was fundamentally about Ukrainian economic self-determination. Personally I think it’s worth noting that was only the first phase. It wasn’t until Yanukovych used violence against the mostly younger Euromaidan protesters that the rest of the country turned out, and you could argue anger at corruption was part of it at that point I suppose, but it really was more visceral once everyone saw berkut deployed against their friends and children.

Mooch, it is really valuable getting input from Justin to understand the issues we will be facing going forward both from the US and Europe's perspective. As an American living in Europe for over 30 years I have also been fortunate to experience the change of the ending of the cold war and its positive impact in all those countries that joined the EU. Having peace is definitely the desired outcome but it should not come at the expense of Ukraine with our betrayal.

Ward's recap of the recent events in the Ukraine situation is a reminder of Russia's duplicity. Add in Putin's excursions into Chechnya and Georgia, and one begins to grasp the utter untrustwiorthiness of his word. Justin's analysis of the current picture and the options available are complete. As a retired American sapper and ground pounder with over 34 years of commissioned service dating from the Tet Offensive, I am sick of the micro management by politicians of military matters, but I'm too old and tired to do anything about it.

Biden's timidness only prolonged the war. Trump's approach will guarantee a bloody stalemate at best or a Russian victory at worst. If evil is allowed to triumph over the good, the world will slip one step closer to a new Dark Age.

1min in: Gorbachev never had any guarantees about stopping NATO expansion east, NATO has an open door policy so it would never have provided that, there may have been some verbal informal discussions but there was never a written guarantee. Countries apply to join NATO, NATO doesn't proactively recruit. This is a hugely important fact. There wasn't even a memorandum of agreement signed, let alone any guarantees. If you reply saying there was, be sure to provide a reference to the document.

Just an incredibly intelligent and informative narrative that is so missing from the conversation going on at this moment. I can't thank you enough to express my appreciation for this opportunity. This is just such an embarrassing moment in history.

Great point made by Bronk that NATO's inclusion of the Eastern Euro's was about stability, not Russia. Who knows where some of those countries could have corkscrewed off to otherwise. What happened in the former Yugoslavia was bad enough...

Ward, the Pledge not to expand NATO is false. Gorbachev stated as such in video before he passed The claim or pledge of no NATO expansion IS a Putin ruzzia revisionist claim. You need to retract that statement

15:08 what's interesting about this guy that asked about Zelenskyy not wearing a suit is that he said in an interview a day or 2 later that it is ok for Elon Musk to not wear a suit because he is saving the US money. As if saving a whole country from destruction is not a good reason
