How to install and split a coax cable outlet

I'm relocating a poorly placed cable outlet and also splitting the line to add cable to another room. Check out my YouTube channel for more DIY videos. I have every step of fully renovating this condo. Enjoy!

I love instructional videos by people who only know a little bit about what they are doing

Good job using a low-voltage bracket. I have to say though, never split lines! You said it does degrade the signal...technically, but you'll never notice. You're wrong. All outlets should have their own cable running to a central location (attic near the access, structured media cabinet, or outside to the cable box usually near the power meter). As a cable installer I see home owners who have ran their own cables incorrectly and all it does is cause problems. ONE CABLE FOR EACH OUTLET!

I'm using a coax splitter to connect a few powered rabbit ears to my TV converter box. It really helps improve reception having more than one rabbit ears working for you. However, I just noticed it's marked input and output. My rabbit ears are connected to the output connections and the line to my converter box is connected to the input so I got it going in reverse. The splitter device doesn't really work in one direction, does it?

Don't ever do this in your home. I have been installing cable for 8 years and this is the most frustrating thing to come across. All lines need to be home run to 1 junction point. You may think it is cheaper to do it yourself but the damage you create now will cost you more later. I always like hearing "your job will be easy. I ran my own lines".

I already have a wall plate with one cable output(for my modem) can I connect the splitter to this wall plate or I have to remove the plate and connect the other cable behind the wall plate

One of the very first thing I do as a cable tech is go to the living room and see if there's a splitter behind the wall. I've seen this so much it's its just 2nd nature. I don't see a big problem with this video because the person that did this can go back and change it if necessary. And as a tech those problems should be very easy to troubleshoot and solve. Good

Don't ever put a splitter in the wall like that. It makes it almost impossible to troubleshoot or replace.

I have an 8-way splitter that is just hanging out of the closet wall. Can I just shove it into the wall and screw a blank plate with wall anchors over it? I do not need a connection at that point.

Technically you have just screwed your chances of upgrading most services. NEVER hide any splitters in the wall. A 2 way splitter litterallg cuts the signal strength in half 3.5 dBmv to be exact. That can be the difference of crappy service and not servicable. Just saying.

Love the install video but it's only one thing you could have done just a little differently. Just like the cable company does, you could have drill a hole through the wall first with a long drill bit and then create the Jack hole in the wall for the coaxial Jack. Feed The Wire through the wall hole to the outside wherever the hookup is for the cable and then complete your installation for the coaxial Jack for the wall and it would have been a lot cleaner install then the way it is now, But that is a good idea what's indicated in the video but just a little ghetto the way it looks.

Very nice to see all the comments from cable techs below. It's refreshing to see comments from people who are educated lol.

Cables are milivolts not just low voltage.

Problem waiting to happen, if you ever get directv and you have that splitter in the wall, ain't no signal passing thru there unless you get regular receivers, should of ran it's own line

Might want to buy a 7/16th's wrench.  You barely tightened those fittings.  Loose fittings cause noise in the cable system that can effect you and your neighbors.

If you use a Coax splitter that is hooked to two separate TVs then can you watch two separate channels on the TVs or do you have to watch the same channel?

First of all you have no clue about how digital RF works with the comment that you won't notice the difference. Secondly WTF would you use that POS IDEAL splitter that WILL fail? Finally why wouldn't you put the splitter in the gang box? When it needs to be serviced now you have to tear out base boards and shit. I can see it now where you call for a professional to redo all your fuckery and then you file a damage claim because you set him up for failure.
