How Cloud Brightening Protects Australia's Great Barrier Reef

Показать описание
Scientists are making clouds brighter to protect the Great Barrier Reef — watch how.
Scientists are making clouds brighter to protect the Great Barrier Reef. This technique, known as cloud brightening, is being used across a section of Australia's Great Barrier Reef to protect vulnerable corals from bleaching due to climate change and the warming of the ocean. A turbine is used to spray microscopic particles of sea water into the air to thicken existing clouds and reduce sunlight over the coral reef ecosystem. According to project leader Dr. Daniel Harrison, the water droplets evaporate, leaving tiny salt crystals which travel into the Atmosphere allowing water vapor to condense and form clouds. This is the project's second trial, as researchers gather data on when corals are most at risk. Researchers believe that the benefits of cloud brightening can lessen over time unless climate change slows down.
