The Day of Atonement, which is celebrated annually in the Church of God today, began from the Israelites’ forty-year life in the desert; and through the Day of Atonement, God let all people know how the forgiveness of sins and salvation is given to us.
Origin of the Day of Atonement
The Day of Atonement is the day when God forgave the Israelites who worshiped the golden calf while Moses was staying on Mount Sinai, fasting for forty days to receive the Ten Commandments.
It is the day when God granted them the Ten Commandments
a second time as a sign that He forgave their sins.
The Day of Atonement in the Old Testament and the fulfillment of its prophecy
At ordinary times, all the sins of the people were kept in the sanctuary for one year. And on the Day of the Atonement, the sins were passed onto the scapegoat as the high priest laid hands on it,
and the scapegoat was sent to the desert. When the scapegoat died, finally all the sins of the people were forgiven.
Likewise, God the Father and God the Mother, who are the reality of the sanctuary, bear all the sins and sufferings of humankind, and on the Day of Atonement They pass all the sins onto Satan, and then Satan enters the punishment of hell.
Revelation 20:10
And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
