It's interesting how Somebody That I Used To Know is a memorable and immortal song while Gotye himself faded away.

That Linkin Park song was historical even before Chester died. It's just a well-layered, balanced, memorable melody and the lyrics aren't bad either

I would love to see a video: "singers vs their idols/inspirations" like Adele vs Amy Winehouse!

Wouldn't say Linkin Park had that "early death" aspect. This song was famous and timeless way before Chester's passing. While it was a tragic and premature passing, these songs were hits way before he was gone. They're musically interesting, and Chester's vocals combined with the emotional load of the lyrics is just something many people strongly relate to.

I’d say “In The End” was very genre defining, and that’s something that helps songs to be immortal in general imo

Joel's "HAH" when he's surprised or finds something funny never fails to crack me up

Although Joel is right about that when the singers passed away makes their songs legendary, we have to accept that In The End was legendary before.

Joel said "'Out of Touch' faded away" and I took that personally... (but honestly, Daryl Hall and John Oates' songs are CLASSICS, all of them!)

I think in Linkin Park's case is different. That song resonated with multiple generations of people, reaching outside its own genre, representing and speaking situations so many felt connected to. It was legendary before Chester's passing.

"Somebody I used to know" always sounded in my head like it was sung by "The Police".. it just... sounds so similar, even instrumentals

Andy Gibb is the younger brother of the Bee Gees. The Bee Gees actually wrote Shadow Dancing. They are super underrated and have written many hit songs for other artists, like Islands in the Streams (Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers) and Women in Love (Barbra Streisand). Andy sadly died at 30, so he wasn't able to have as much success as his 3 older brothers.

Joel the reason you don’t see the jaw vibrato very much is because it’s absolutely awful for you. When I was studying voice in college, my opera professor used to point out all the weird jaw movements Kathleen Battle does and tell us if we did that we were going to end up with TMJ. Maybe it’s not such a big issue in pop music because careers tend to be shorter, but a woman in opera can work from her 20’s to her 60’s easily so making sure you take care of your voice is important, including your jaw.

I think "Tie A Yellow Ribbon 'Round the Old Oak Tree, " is memorable because at the time soldiers were returning from Vietnam, and long years of service. Maybe I just remember it because of my Dad.

The Bee Gees and Andy Gibb are actually all brothers and The Bee Gees co-wrote on Andy’s song, as well as sang backup, but Andy passed away early, which I think contributed to his music fading away.

Out of touch has definitely not faded away, hear it quite often still on radio and on playlists of people who like that era of music.

I think Country Roads and Stayin Alive can fall in the bracket of "easy to sing along and clap song"
If a song is very catchy but also super easy to sing along to especially the chorus or in a group then it makes a huge difference.
Think of "We are the Champions" or "We will rock you", super basic song writing and melodies yet so effective and are both timeless.

There's a lot of songs I feel don't get the attention they deserve, while there's some songs that top the charts & you're listening to it I do think sometimes it comes down to record labels & who they choose to "push" the most.

The death of an artist can make a song more popular but In The End is definitely popular on its own. I mean there's 17 years between the release and Chesters death. I think the end of a career or the splitting up of a group or duo is powerful too. Daft Punk is the best late example.

I disagree with the last one. Blurry is also a great song. Its emotional and it has good lyrics. The song never fades and is always up there in my top 100 favourite songs.

A couple additions to the immortal side: 1) Harmonies. That was one of the big differences between The Bee Gees and their brother, Andy, Andy’s best songs were the ones where Barry harmonized with him. Bee Gees, Beatles, Queen. Three of the most lasting groups, all with incredible harmonies. 2) Singable. That’s the factor Take Me Home Country Roads has. Insane vocals are great to listen to, but songs you can sing along, especially in a crowd, give you a connection to the song.
