Steinberg Cubase Pro 11 - SonicLAB Review

Cubase Pro 11 has been out for a while, and Gaz Williams who's been a user for many years has been working with it to figure out what the new features are actually usefull for in a pro environment.

SUMMARY: There are plenty of new features to explore that increase Cubase’s ability to be both a creative hub and editing platform. Out of all the new stuff, the significant editing enhancements in the venerable key editor will surely be hugely appreciated especially by those who have traveled along the 30 plus year journey.

Thank you for the video, I enjoyed it! The new export functionality has certainly been a time-saver. Of the new plug-ins Squasher is my favorite - it works with a lot of different material. This week I really managed to liven up an acoustic piano recording with it. It brought this Olafur Arnalds type intimacy to the sound.

Are you available to master a bunch of industrial low fi electro from a gaggle of new tunes ? originally recorded in mp4ma? Im an American fan of you and yours for many years back to sonic touch. Peace Christo👽

Nice one! Finally broke down and paid for a DAW that's not reaper... This. It's got everything I need as a music artist. I am very excited! No more crashing torrented Ableton! hehe

Could the export queue be used to export all tracks separately through the Analog Heat? I know GAZ uses one, and it would be awesome to get a way to automatically do this as it has to be done with the "render in realtime" option enabled.

Call me daft, but I wish there was a way, you could opt for an original monochromic version of Cubase. I love the simplicity of the first version, sure, now it would be a fully fledged sequencer and midi arranger that didn’t keep crashing. That’s all I really need! I can do without all the bells and whistles.

If only they'd figure out a licensing solution other than a USB dongle.

With the great Spectral Layers ARA implementation I'm very tempted to move away from RX unless iZotope manages to get their shit together and have full ARA2 support in the next version.

Steinberg used to release 2 cubase updates, in June and December.
Each year new products are added to the steinberg catalog (internal dev or acquisition) yet the number of employees and devs barely change:
They went from cubase, wavelab and nuendo..and they kept adding:
Groove agent... halion...dorico...vst transit/connect..halion libraries (outsourced, but etc
What's next ?
Their devs must code new features, test, integrate..must fix beta bugs..must do the technical support ..must handle several versions, artist/pro..
They have all that work, for each product they have. Then there are all the hardware drivers, which must work flawlessly. Lots of work, for sure. And the Ara2...whose integration must be perfect.
Also, removing 32bit support wasn't just a 'less bugs, less people use it"... but rather to save a couple of months of development.

Final result: there only is one cubase update per year, instead of 2, and often, there aren't enough "huge new features". Honestly, adding 2 dorico fonts to the score in cubase..adding a lfo to the sampler...adding a dry/wet button to an old plugin...shouldn't it be a simple 10.5.2.x maintenance update, instead of a "NEW Cubase 11.0 FEATURE ? ...
Worse, not only cubase get less updates and much less features, but all the other products such as halion or groove agent will only get a major update once every 2.5 to 3 years...
Exemple: groove agent 5, November 2018--> 26 months without a major update
Halion 6, june 2017--> 44 months without a major update(yeah, creating new synthesis does take time..!)
...
There seriously is a big problem at steinberg. They can't just keep adding more and more products, without hiring a bunch of new devs.
2021. In just a few months, we're probably gonna hear/read 'steinberg about to acquire TC helicon..Lexicon..'..or "steinberg just announced their new product, xyz.."
It's this simple: the more stuff they need to support, the less features we will get, on the next cubase..halion..etc PAID update.
Not to criticize, but..the new stuff in cubase 11.. the 2 or 3 Reaper devs would probably code 95% of it .. in less than 2 or 3 weeks... and would release it as simple free maintenance updates. Just saying.
Now, after this, let me go back to my cubase session ;)
