The Catholic Church distinguishes formal or obstinate (persistent) heresy from material heresy. There are, therefore, formal heretics and material heretics.

So example Saint Augustine some of his teachings would be considered incorrect or heretical, but because Augustine himself did not know he was teaching something incorrect and heretical he would not considered a heretic, and he would only be considered one if he was then corrected and still taught heresy

"Heretic" can only be applied to those who have first been in the Church. Therefore, it would not be proper to call someone outside the Church a heretic, who has never been in Communion with the Church even though they may hold what the Church considers to be a heretical belief
