As a part of a 5 tier filter, I bet this would work wonders. But if you use it on its own, it will not decontaminate the water, remember to boil it as well. Always. You get a super special occasion with glacier ponds, even then if they have animals boil it anyhow

You can use sand for filtering water but for small particle you can put your water on fire and catching some vapors ( distalation ) but it's long process like one hour to catching a table spoon of water you are ready
