When pressing d, the game has to process whether your side stepping or crouching, while d/b is not ambiguous so there are no frames used to distinguish between a crouch and a sidestep.

Also you cant block King's alley kicks by holding just down.

Db is low block is most other fighting game including street fighter so idk about hold down being common

Thanks for the incite fam! And also for traditional 2d fighters, down back is how to crouch block as well. So most people should feel right at home

Actually, it is not weird if you think about it. It is the same concept when holding back while standing. In this case, you will add down because it is a low. The reason that down sometimes work is because of the string properties. Some strings has fast low where you need to hold back/down because holding back is the main drive to block ( simillar to standing) and some strings just don't.

I was taught back in the days of Tekken 4 to always hold back because some moves break your neutral guard. Neutral guard is when you dont hold back. In this case this is neutral low guard and it gets broken by this string. Like it jails you if you are in neutral guard. If you dont duck and stand in neutral standing block you are gonna get hit too, but if you just hold back-standing guard you are ginna get hit by low and block the high.

The hold down thing is like a weak block. If just stand neutral the auto block engages. So if you press down when the auto block is engaged it will block low. So if your standing you can easily transition from high blocks to low just pressing down.

I got very lucky as I made online friends with a legacy player who told me a lot of this more niche knowledge that tekken requires you to learn even though it is never laid out anywhere ingame. I could easily see players getting frustrated for being punished by not really even being in the wrong.

Actually, in most fighting games, you hold DB to block lows. Tekken is one of the few games that have auto blocking in neutral or on crouching. Most games don’t have that and you’re forced to hold back or DB to block.

I used a mix of both and never knew there was an actual difference. Drove me fucking nuts when I knew I was attempting to duck and nothing else and got hit. I always assumed it was just lag messing with inputs and that I didn't crouch in time.

Not only that, but it's actually less comfortable to use down. Why? Try blocking a 10-string with mixed mids-lows. Which is easier, moving between down and back, or down-back and back?

I learned it through Feng's 3~4, 4 or smth, because it's just that visual, and at first I just low parried, but then I for whatever reason decided to block and I discovered you can either df or db the second hit, but down won't work.

But in general I feel like all beginner guides I watched mentioned always holding back if you intend on blocking, and that also includes crouching block

6:26 most traditional fighter require d/b as your down block

I kind of rediscovered this this morning. I was just randomly practicing that Lucky Chloe string that's low, low, mid, high, low (I think that's what it is) and noticed that even if I held down the whole time I couldn't block the last low. Then I just tried holding down back and it worked.

Ive been holding d/b since Street Fighter II world warrior.
And boy my hands are tired.

Holding down is equivalent to like a neutral guard and neutral guard can be broken by strings. The game allows you to do it cuz it just makes sense for a down button to be used for crouching. A plus is that you'll block some lows even if you fuck up the db input for whatever reason. In Tekken specifically, db to block is necessary because otherwise you wouldn't be able to sidestep duck.
