Wolseley and Gordon were not infamous, they were famous, (as well as revered). They are infamous to post modernists. Chinese corruption and incompetence were why the Brits and French were in China - explicitly stated in the book early on. You don't absorb that. The sacking of the Summer Palace was described by Fraser because of Chinese intransigence - they needed to be clearly shown who was in charge and who had lost. That's stated very clearly on. Again, you don't absorb that.
