In 1997, Apple was in dire straits. The company had been struggling for years and was on the verge of bankruptcy. Steve Jobs had returned as CEO, but he knew the company needed an injection of cash from a source that the industry respected. Since existing shareholders were pulling out of Apple, and potential investors were afraid of buying stock in a company that was expected to fail.

It was one of the most bizarre dealings in the tech community. I remember Bill Gates being on screen and was met with a groan by the audience. Of course, we forget that Apple and Samsung still do business together, despite being smartphone competitors.

It should be noted that while IE was the default browser (it was a 5 year deal), Netscape was still preinstalled on every computer Apple sold. Once that 5 year deal was done Apple launched Safari with Mac OS X Panther. (Other names they didn’t use, “Freedom” “Alexander” and… “iBrowse” 🤦‍♂️)

First gates investment was in early 90's, because 2 companies are better than 1 for healthy ecosystem, Microst did good biz selling Mac word and excel, and to avoid government mandated monopoly regulations that were being discussed

If Apple had died in 1998 life nowdays would be so different that is hard to imagine. I believe that phones and pdas would merge but all of them would have a full size keyboard.
