What size Senator? I would recommend using a kayak.

We will be moving from Fort Hood, Tx to Florida on the East coast hopefully between Crystal River and North of Tampa. I can't wait to get out there can catch some nice ones. Looking at getting a boat and just livin' the dream!

They are casting guides. I don't like larger diameter spinning guides when casting heavy baits and rigs (broke rods). This rod has been rebuilt with lowrider guides.

Put your time in and you will get rewarded. Use fresh bait and change your baits often if the crabs are eating them.

Get a spinning rod with lowrider guides instead.

Really enjoying all your videos. i have been watching them for 2 days now and have learned a lot. Thanks so much for sharing your passion. I do have a few questions: 1- I am using a Penn Senator and was wondering what pound test to use as my main line? I currently have 280 yards of 50 lb test, should I go to 30 for for line on the reel? 2- Can you hand cast a Penn Senator or is it a kayak only? ....if so How do you cast one?

Mono on spinning reels is becoming much less popular. You cannot fit as much line on the reel and cannot get good casting distance with heavier mono (30+lbs). I use only braid on spinning and sometimes a short mono topshot (less than 10ft).

do you prefer spinning reels or bait casters for surf fishing

Hey Josh, I do appreciate all of your hard work! Just a question, How long is that shock leader? Is it 400 lbs mono? So from what I understood the braid connection with the FG knot has to be exposed out of the rod tip with at least a foot? Thanks again

@BlacktipH He does it from shore or piers only...

I built some of your rigs today, very anxious to try them out. Kayak isn't an option for me so ill be casting from shore. 50 yard far enough to catch some good size sharks?

In this video, you have a bottom rig with a sinker, but other videos I have seen, you cast out bottles to float the bait. Do you do this to target different species of shark? What would be better from the surf if you do not have a kayak? Thanks a lot.

I am buying a Penn Spinfisher V ssv8500ll and I was wondering on what type of line? I see you said you like Jerry Brown, but what is the difference between Hollow and None Hollow other than price? I will be fishing on the gulf side what is the difference (if any) in color?

you should use a conventional reel you can use heavier line and heavier sinkers and it doesn't put tension on your fingers

@BlacktipH
mm unfortunately we don't have this surf rod here in Australia. I found very +ve reviews about this Daiwa sensor, It's graphite, very light, all ppl using it are swearing by it. on the 15kg big game surf I can tighten the drag all the way to the point that the fish might drag me to the water (it happened with this massive sting ray I came across), so I assume a 19 kg rod would be plenty right ??!?! also Shimano Tiralejo Surf Rods are very nice with sliding grip but comes in 12' only

Josh.. What tips can you give for shark fishing off the Dania Beach surf?

Josh, I am looking into starting Beach Shark Fishing in Australia and your videos have been really helpful in getting me keen to do something about it. I am interesting in different rods that I could use on a Penn OFS 9500. All catch and release.

Will I need to get a custom rod made or is there retail surf rods that can handle 50 lb braid? All the ones that I can find handle 8-12 kg. Any suggestions?

Cheers for the great videos!

How far out would you need to cast it in order to get a shark or a fun fish? I'm new to the surf, i've been going off a boat all my life

Have you ever seem them leave the bait on the ground, get a running start and slingshot it out? My bro does it like that. Incredible distances! I cant do it tho.
