The City of Petersburg: Petersburg Video Tour!

Trust Co-Founder and Historian A. Wilson Greene comes to you from downtown Petersburg to discuss the city's citizens and infrastructure during the time of the Civil War.

My grandmother passed away in the early 1980's, but if you asked her rhetorically where she was going, she would often quip, "I'm going to Petersburg to get the right time." Of course, I had no idea what she was talking about, but subsequently figured out that she meant that because Petersburg was a railroad town and the conductors on the railroad were precise in their timekeeping, it was the place to go to set your watch for the most accurate time.

My family lived at Ft Lee 1967-69 so Petersburg is a place that has a lot of memories for me. I remember my father used to take my brother and me to the barbershop at the old Petersburg Hotel just a block or two from the courthouse. (He thought they did a better job than the PX barbers.) Been back for the battlefields several times over the years and hope I can get back there again one of these days. Enjoying these videos of course!

This is an awesome video. I live about 10 minutes from this area and frequently drive around the town, exploring. It’s absolutely beautiful and easy to imagine it as it was back then. Very interesting to learn some more history about the area.

Petersburg, Virginia has a lot of great history. It was why The film Lincoln was filmed because the city does its best to keep its history

Center Hill mansion is beautiful a lot of history there, and the tunnel that runs from the River to the house, the ships would dock and they would bring goods to the house, and important people would come bye boat and would go thru the tunnel without being seen, part of the tunnel is blocked off now, Once a year they do a night tour and around I believe 7 pm you can hear the solders marching Must see if your in Petersburg Va Another must see Is Blandford Cemetery and Robert E Lee house in Colonial Heights Va

Lots of freedman bureau activity in Petersburg and Richmond. Virginia Union University was founded on 1865 in old slave jail. Please cover more freedmen bureau stuff.
