The suicide rates for neurodiverse people are fucked, especially when you bring prison into it. That's how I lost my dad. Thank you for speaking up, I'm so sorry for your loss.

Treated for depression and anxiety for DECADES, which are actually just symptoms of having to mask ADHD. My son was diagnosed 10+ years ago, and lo and behold, every female in my family has it. Never treated because we did so well at school. We didn't have the 'can't sit still' kind of ADHD, just the "my brain is going a billion miles an hour" kind, and nobody saw the problems because we all masked so well.

I have ADHD. Classic female case. Adult diagnosed and wanted to ki!! myself since puberty. I feel glad that there are a lot of people talking about it and I feel much better knowing I'm not crazy. This is real and it is complex. It also depends on how you were raised. I was a terrible student but did great in anything creative. I feel like I could have been a really successful artist but there are and were so many factors holding me back. The depression and feelings of self hate can be overwhelming. So tragic.

The reason why more people are diagnosed with adhd now than 20 years ago is because the DSM5 has changed the diagnostic parameters. Before, you needed to have been diagnosed in childhood AND you needed to have hyperactive symptoms. Plus, it's become much less stigmatized to be treated, and there are much better medications.

Things like ADHD can deeply engrain a feeling of failure and hopelessness. You might be able to intellectually understand that you are different, but over time (especially without treatment, therapy, or assistance), it can be absolutely devastating to a person. If you are someone without ADHD and have a hard time understanding, just look at people reacting to life after their treatment. Especially with medication for the first time as an adult. It’s an emotional experience, because you begin to understand just how much you’ve been held back all of your life. Imagine having bad vision, but not knowing others saw things far better than you. You’d feel like you are just inadequate. You can’t read anything from afar, catch a ball, you keep bumping into things. You would think others are just better at doing everything. Then all of a sudden you get glasses and realize this is how everyone else sees the world and you just stop to think about how different your life would be if you got them earlier or knew that you saw the world differently.

Good to know that my struggles throughout my life are now a trend. Because my issues haven’t ever been trendy enough to get genuine help for until I was an adult.

I got very angry when I read this or heard it in the press. It's like, "Oh it's just a fashion!" Screening and assessment then support and guidance are needed in my opinion. Raise awareness

I have Adhd, bi-polar l disorder, anxiety, depression, autism, and ptsd. The first 2 were diagnosed at age 3 cause my mom has bi-polar and my dad has adhd. The other 4 were diagnosed at age 13 and 14. I have manic episodes often, mainly at night. Ptsd is from the emotional, and verbal abuse I grew up with because no one knew how to deal with me. Plus the sexual abuse I went through when I was 14 from a family member. I have erratic behaviors that make it hard to make and keep friends and really hard to keep a job. I had been in and out of mental hospitals 17 times from age 12 to age 15 as well. Been in therapy since I was 4 and on meds since I was 5. I'm 24 this year. I have been on suicide watch more times than I can count since I was 13. Last year I almost died from an attempt. Yeah its real and it sucks for everyone involved in my life.

I’m scared to even go in for a diagnosis because no one will believe me if I can finally say that I’m diagnosed with ADHD. They’ll think I’m faking it because “everyone had ADHD nowadays”

Its the worst thing you can do is to make someone feel like something that they struggle with is a trend.

Yes there are people who will try to use it as a trend but the truth is you just don't know if it is real or not. The best philosophy i ever adopted in my life is to stop and think about what I say. I always think about if its true, kind or necessary. ( i know its a bit of a butcher on a quote) but it has stopped me from saying a lot of harmful ignorant things and has helped me listen more and be curious.

So instead od judging i would rather stop and ask someone how what they are experiecing effects them amd their lives. In the end its not the label that matters but rather what we can do to help those around us.

It could be a statistical trend, where more people are seeking help and getting a diagnosis than in the past, not a trend as oh were all just pretending and in a year or so we go back to "normal"

Honestly you are spot on and I had a hard time at school with EQ and relationships I attempted to take my life a few times then moved to self medicate to survive. A few years ago I was speaking to someone who was super knowledgeable about ADHD and he listened to me talking about my self and after a bit he said you have ADHD, I laughed “I’m a girl we don’t get it” he it’s different for female yes but you have classic traits and helped get me a diagnosis and oh the difference information makes I no longer hide behind hating my self I no ways I improve my outlook and my self esteem. It’s been amazing to know why I am me not feeling like a waste of space and oxygen.
I am sorry to the young man’s family

Its not a trend its just being brought to attention. Any time the general public becomes aware of something it becomes the forfront of their thoughts. And because it wasnt talked about before any new talk of it seems like a lot. But really its 2% of the entire population which is a big number but really not compared to thevrest of society.

im sick of people saying that its not a disability, just because some people dont feel disbaled by it (just like some blind, deaf, amputees, etc dont feel disabled) does not mean that its not. Disabled is not a bad word, it just means that we are not like the average person and the world is not build for us and for some people thatsl works out fine and for others its a really big problem, people are different and i dont like when people downplay things others are going through.

It's sad, we need to talk more about how we feel and not feel bad for doing so! Lift eachother up, talk some and buy some flowers or a plant for someone ❤ it will make you both feel great ❤

You have no idea how much the idea of being stuck in prison keeps me up at night. I think about how it would cause me that level of disregulation. And people tell me "nah you just get use to that life." Im like i cant even get use to this life like wtf you mean.

Wow it's almost as if people with poor impulse control and emotional dysregulation need our help!!! So frustrated by the lack of consideration in the UK between offending and neurodiversity. I'm ADHD and it's all too easy to understand how these things happen. People love to think of the condition as 'oh you just have a hard time concentrating' when it is so much more serious and often dangerous than that.
