How Iron Ore is Turned Into Steel?

Steel and iron is an essential part of our everyday life. It makes up the buildings where we work, the appliances that we use, and the cars that we drive. Without it, modern day life would look a lot different. Last year, the world steel industry produced 1,864 million tons, the equivalent of over 5100 empire state buildings!

So, how does this essential aspect of daily life transform from some rocks in the ground into one of the strongest structural materials in the world? Let's take a look.

The steelmaking process starts with the processing of raw iron ore. The rocks that are mined containing iron ore are ground and the near-elemental iron is extracted using magnetic rollers. This fine iron ore is then processed into clumps that can be put inside of a blast furnace. At the same time, coal is cleaned of impurities in a furnace. This results in an almost elemental form of carbon, called coke. This coke is then mixed with the iron ore clumps and heated together in a blast furnace. This process produces molten iron, or pig iron, from which steel is made.

Different manufacturers often add additives to the molten steel, like chromium, nickel, titanium, and a variety of others to produce desired traits. Adding these elements creates different alloys of the steel.

At this point, the molten iron, sometimes referred to as molten steel at this point, passes through continuous casters and is formed into its final shape to cool. Steel production is essential to the modern world, but its overall process isn't really that difficult to understand.

Well I guess the way you explained the process is like when someone asks how time is made and giving the reply that it's when the hand on a clock moves. It takes generations of knowledge and training to be able to even understand how a blast furnace works, let alone a BOF, continuous caster, hot rolling mill, cold mill, Pickler, annealing furnace, temper mill, all these things go in to making the steel you see today. That must be one hell of a book

Errata...the hot metal produced at the Blast Furnace is not Pig Iron. It is generally called Hot Metal or Molten Iron. Yes, it can become Pig Iron which happens at a Pig Mill where the molten Iron is cast into small and transportable ingots with a rounded top that resembles a piglet. When cooled these are transported often for remelting at a foundary. Hot metal is transferred directly to steelmaking shop via rail generally in what is called a torpedo ladle.

Then orville goes into the furnace where he is killed melted down and extruded. A very painful process, he is then made to lift 100 times his own weight until oxygen eats away at him like a flesh eating bacteria until he is unwanted and thrown away. Only to be captured by a gypsy and made into a piece of weird furniture. The end

Easy. Learn how to smelt Iron Bars using Iron Ore. learn it from the mining trainer. Requires mining level 125.
