Great move by Buffett again. Not only has he had good returns with these Japanese stocks, but he has also protected his downside by borrowing Japanese Yen. If the Japanese Yen suddenly experiences high inflation, the Japanese debt also becomes less valuable in dollar terms. Therefore, in the worst case, paying it off with the cash Berkshire Hathaway has on hand does not look that bad.

At the end of the day, a very interesting addition to the approach of investing in potentially great companies in potentially inflationary countries.

Just to put something into context - MSBHF 2022 earnings were equal to that of HSBC, however MSBHF has a market cap of 50 bln USD while HSBC enjoys a market cap that is 3x that. Valuations are still pretty cheap even post Buffett for what those companies earn. 😮
